The Appalachian Trail

In 2021, the town of Clayton, in Rabun County, was designated as the 51st AT Community. As an AT Community, Clayton and Rabun County welcome hikers with special services such as drop off, pick up and retail discounts at participating locations. Hike the AT in Rabun County starting at Dick’s Creek Gap for stunning summit views and catching sight of Lake Burton nestled between rolling mountains near the horizon. https://appalachiantrail.com/

Tallulah Gorge State Park

One of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern U.S., Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep. Visitors can hike rim trails to several overlooks, or they can obtain a permit to hike to the gorge floor (100 per day, not available during water releases). A suspension bridge sways 80 feet above the rocky bottom, providing spectacular views of the river and waterfalls. https://gastateparks.org/TallulahGorge#

Hemlock Falls

Hemlock Falls is a 15’cascade, in Moccasin Creek State Park on Lake Burton. The trail is one of Rabun County’ most scenic and features two pretty cascades falling into Moccasin Creek.

The road to the trail begins just south of the entrance to Moccasin Creek State Park.

Minnehaha Falls

One of the most photographed, the Minnehaha Trail (.4 mile in length) follows Fall Branch until it dead ends at Minnehaha Falls.  This waterfall tumbles approximately 100 feet falling and shoaling. https://explorerabun.com/minnehaha-falls/

Dicks Creek Falls

Combining scenic beauty, a waterfall, and a hike with gently flowing river just about makes our day, so Dick’s Creek Falls is pretty much on the agenda. Beautiful Dicks Creek Falls is one of the highlights of both the Bartram Trail and the Chatooga River Trail. The trail allows access to the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River area from Sandy Ford Road.https://www.gawaterfalls.com/dicks-creek-falls-chattooga.html

Black Rock Mountain State Park

Black Rock Mountain State Park is Georgia’s highest state park and offers 10 mountain-top cabins with fully equipped kitchens and rocking chair porches.  Two are dog friendly and advance reservations are required.  You’ll be surrounded by Blue Ridge Mountains scenery, 11 miles of hiking trails, spectacular overlooks and a small fishing pond. www.gastateparks.org/BlackRockMountain

Angel Falls and Panther Falls

Both are cascading falls of about 50 feet and are located along Joe Branch Creek. Starting from the rear of the Rabun Beach Camping Area #2, it is a moderately strenuous one mile hike to the viewing bridge at the foot of Angel Falls. Panther Falls is located along the same trail at the ½ mile mark. Above Panther Falls, the trail ascends through a heavy rhododendron canopy along a number of other cascades. https://www.gawaterfalls.com/rabun-county.html

Rabun Bald

At an elevation of 4,696 feet,Rabun Bald is the tallest mountain in Rabun County and the second-highest peak in Georgia.  An observation tower on the summit provides hikers with views that extend for more than 100 miles.  According to Native American legend, Rabun Bald is inhabited by fire-breathing demon people: some campers still report hearing strange sounds throughout the night. https://www.atlantatrails.com/hiking-trails/rabun-bald-bartram-trail/#directions

Bad Branch Falls

A 20’ cascade, it is 3.2 miles from the Lake Seed Dam.  Bad Branch Falls is a beautiful fall in the Rabun County waterfalls system.
Take Lake Rabun Road to the dam, then cross the lake below the dam and go 0.3 miles to the stop sign and turn right on Crow Creek Road. Follow Crow Creek Road for 2.9 miles. The unmarked trailhead will be on the left. Allow five minutes for an easy to the falls. https://www.gawaterfalls.com/rabun-county.html
